Mykonos | Aegean sea | Cyclades

The party island

Mykonos is the party island of the Greek, and of course in particular the gay community. It attracts many guys from all over the world. Sailing can be done from Athens, but also e.g. from Santorini. The Cyclades are known for their typical white/blue houses that blend beautifully in the surroundings.

Depending on the season, winds can sometimes be strong, especially when the so-called Meltemi blows. This can make seas a bit choppy when sailing from one island to the next.

Typical islands to visit when leaving from Athens are Kea, Kitnos, Siros and Mykonos itself.

Skippers note: The famous Elysium hotel on top of the hills has a great view on the sunset and nice cocktails (bring enough cash though 😉 ).

Lefkas | Ionian sea | Ionian islands

Relaxed cruising

The sailing area is south of the Lefkas marina and starts once leaving the channel. The area is famous for it's many bays, not too long distances, beautiful small villages and green islands with pine and olive trees. And it is not unusual to see dolphins here!

Most of the sailing area is protected by the islands which means that the seas are usually not very rough. The winds are generally not very strong and pick up in the afternoon. Nights are usually quiet.

Typical islands to visit are Lefkas, Scorpios (once owned by the Onassis family), Meganissi, Kalamos, Kastos, Ithaca and Kefalonia.

Skippers note: one of my favourite areas, perhaps because this is where I learned (and fell in love) with sailing!

Kos | Aegean sea | Dodecanese islands

Exploring the 12 islands

The twelve islands (= the meaning of 'dodecanese') around Kos are very different and worth visiting. Visit the vulcano on Nisiros, an unspoiled beautiful blue bay on Alimnia, pretty Simi or the monastery of St. John the Baptist on Patmos.

There are open waters between the islands and crossing over from one to the other may take a couple of hours.

From Kos you either go north/northwest or south/south east for a week of sailing. Typical islands to visit in the north are Pserimos, Kalimnos, Leros, Lipsi and Patmos. In the south: Nisiros,Tilos, Chalki, Alimia and Simi. Daily distances in the South are in general a bit longer than in the North.

Skippers note: very nice cruising area due to its variety of islands, pretty villages and nature.

Skiathos | Aegean sea | Sporades islands

The scattered islands

Legend has it that the Gods created the Sporades Islands by tossing colored pebbles into the Aegean Sea. The myth is reflected in the name Sporades, which means “the scattered ones,” and in the colors of their verdant green hills, sapphire blue waters and sandy beaches. Located off the east coast of Greece, the Sporades archipelago includes four permanently inhabited islands, offering sailors a unique travel experience.

There are open waters between the islands and most are relatively close to each other.

From Skiathos you go East/Northeast for a week of sailing. Typical islands to visit are Skiathos (a.k.a. the Mama Mia island), Alonnisos, Peristrera and Kira Panagia. Also the nude Banana beach is not to be missed 😉

Skippers note: beautiful sailing in clear waters, with sandy beaches and, with a bit of luck, dolphins! Make sure to practise some ABBA songs too 😉
